Happy New Year 2008

Happy New Year to everyone!
IIS Digest has now been online for 3 years. Looking back 2007 was an exciting year, with alot of IIS news and a Go Live! license for IIS 7.0. 2008 looks to be even more exciting with the upcoming release of Windows Server 2008.
I hope everyone still like my site, IIS Digest should still be worth visiting in 2008.

Microsoft and Zend annonce collaboration

A few days ago Zend and Microsoft announced a technical collaboration to significantly enhance the reliability and performance of PHP on the Windows platform. The technology preview is in response to joint customer demand for better support of the Windows Server platform.

  • The technology engagement between the two companies will include: Technical improvements for PHP, which will be submitted under the PHP license to the PHP community for feedback and contribution.
  • Microsoft intends to develop and release an Internet Information Services (IIS) add-on component, FastCGI, that will serve as the interface between PHP and the IIS Web server.
  • Zend will establish a Windows testing lab and conduct regular tests and performance improvements to maintain high performance of PHP on the Windows Server platform as PHP evolves.
  • Microsoft and Zend will work to help ensure a production-quality PHP runtime environment for IIS 6.0 (Windows Server 2003) and IIS 7.0 (Windows Server “Longhorn”).
  • Zend and Microsoft will actively participate in the PHP community, ensuring an open discussion to help developers planning to deploy PHP applications on the Windows Server platform.

    VMware Server 1.0 released

VMware has finally released VMware Server 1.0 (formerly known as Vmware GSX), it’s their free version of a Virtual Server product. The product has been in beta the last few months. What looks really good in the product is the feature with the ability to capture entire state of a virtual machine and roll back at any time with the click of a single button, that’s perfect for development and test systems.

VMware Server is feature-packed with the following capabilities:

    • Runs on standard x86 hardware
    • Support for 64-bit guest operating systems, including Linux, Windows, NetWare and Solaris
    • Support for VMware VirtualCenter to efficiently provision, monitor and manage infrastructure from a central management console
    • Experimental support for 2-Way Virtual SMP, enabling a single virtual machine to span multiple physical processors
    • Runs on a wider variety of Linux and Windows host and guest operating systems than any server virtualization product on the market
    • Ability to capture entire state of a virtual machine and roll back at any time with the click of a single button
    • Installs like an application with quick and easy, wizard-driven installation
    • Quick and easy, wizard-driven virtual machine creation
    • Support for VMware or Microsoft virtual machine format and Symantec LiveState Recovery images with VM Importer
    • Experimental support for Intel Virtualization Technology
    • Investment protection with an easy upgrade path to VMware Infrastructure

Virtual Server 2005 R2 available for free

Microsoft has today annonced that Virtual Server 2005 R2 product is now available as a no-charge download. Combined with the flexible virtualization licensing now available with Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (Buy the Enterprise version and get 4 Windows Server 2003 std. licenses), this means there is little barrier to adoption for customers who want to realize the benefits of server virtualization.

Microsoft is proberly following VMware who made their GSX Server (now VMware Server) available for free some time ago. Their product is still in beta though.

I find Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 to be a great product, especially for creating certain test systems or maybe setup a server with a development/QA environment. Great for testing or developing web environments.
