HMC 4.0 & WBH 4.5 Announced

Today at the Microsoft Hosting Summit, Microsoft announced updates to two
solutions for hosting service providers:

  • Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) Version 4.0
  • Microsoft Solution for Windows-based Hosting (WBH) Version 4.5. 

Following are key highlights:

The solutions take advantage of the enhancements to Microsoft Exchange
Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, improving communications
and information sharing, and work productivity for SMBs.

Utilizing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, HMC 4.0 provides anywhere access
for users, built-in protection from spam and viruses, and operational
efficiency for IT administrators.

Windows-based Hosting Version 4.5 leverages SharePoint 3.0, which provides
40 customized templates designed to help address specific business needs,
such as time management, accounting, and project tracking, and new tools to
create Web-based content, such as blogs and wikis.

SharePoint Hosting Guidance

Microsoft has published a whitepaper on Windows SharePoint Service v3 hosting solutions.

SharePoint v3 offers a lot of great features and functionality for hosters and this whitepaper talks about how to use these features to create a shared hosting solution. The whitepaper is built upon lessons learned from a dozen or so hosting partners conducted over the past several months. The guide includes things like ways to deploy SharePoint, how to use forms authentication with SharePoint, how to provision SharePoint sites, migration from WSS v2 to v3 and even a section about deployment issues in hosting scenarios.

SharePoint Solution Accelerator Released

Microsoft has released the final version of the Windows SharePoint Solution Accelerator. The solution contains toolkit, scripts and new upgraded application templates. The solution will provide guidance and tools needed to help upgrade customized sites or site templates from WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0.

The Solution Accelerator Team (SAT) has created a solution accelerator that provides guidance and tools to enable IT Professionals to successfully upgrade their Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 custom sites and templates. The result: a set of custom sites and templates that will operate in a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 environment. This toolkit also includes a set of upgraded Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 application templates.
